Page County Public Schools seeks an Educational Sign Language Interpreter that can be available from 8-3:30pm daily, Monday-Friday.  

 

Primary Function

Experience with American Sign Language is required.  As a related service provider, the educational interpreter is an integral member of the educational team. The educational interpreter provides interpreting and/or transliterating in the educational environment. Additionally, the role of the interpreter may include language facilitation, modeling, and/or mentoring when more appropriate for the needs of an individual learner.

 

The VDOE provides guidelines for school divisions that qualified educational interpreters hold at least one of the following:

 

  • (PREFERRED) EIPA score of 3.5 or higher AND a passed EIPA written exam
  • VQAS score of III in at least one category AND a passed VQAS written assessment
  • Any national interpreter certification, excluding CDI

 

 

Reports to:

Director of Special Services

 

Essential Functions:

 

  • Implement the student’s IEP
  • Use the appropriate modality and language
  • Interpret at the appropriate language level
  • Clearly convey all aspects of meaning and content
  • Make sure the goal of the lesson is clear
  • Make appropriate use of fingerspelling
  • Facilitate and support participation and social communication
  • Monitor student comprehension
  • Participate as a member of the educational team as a related service provider
  • Provide feedback regarding class access, social aspects, behavior, and learning style
  • Know, understand, and support IEP goals
  • Abide by EIPA Guidelines of Professional Conduct (see attachment)
  • Utilize time before school, after school, or when student is with a signing member of the educational team for preparation which may include review of coursework, meeting with teachers, vocabulary development, review of lesson plans, literature, videos, notes, tests, quizzes, and other class materials.
  • Provide staff training regarding the roles and responsibilities of the educational interpreter
  • Provide basic maintenance and troubleshooting for amplification equipment
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
